The big sea bites

Posted by Matthew Vasilescu on

For those who have seen it on my SecretShire page you will know what happened over the weekend for those who don't follow me there please do.

So what happened?
Well water is a powerful thing and we have all seen that with the hurricane weather pattern that has been in the news.

I'm building you up aren't I!!

I lost close to $5,000 worth of gear to the ocean, I went down to a favourite spot knowing the seas were going to be big and that I wanted to capture them.
I put gear down where I thought it was safe about 20-25 meters behind me where there was no sign of water on the rocks.
I edged myself closer to the water to capture some bigger waves as they crashed onto the shoreline about 5 meters or so below me.
That term rogue wave comes to mind because as I shot this image and watched is crash I turned and ran but not too quickly. The wave crashed and I got drenched up to my waist and thought oh well i can deal with that but the water kept going past me.
As I looked up and saw my gear with a small wall of water running toward it I panicked and ran as quick as I could to grab it. This all happened in slow motion as any knows who's had an experience like this, as I reached out to grab it but was nowhere near close enough I then thought what about me (not the song) but oh no I could go with it.

So a hard lesson to learn that's for sure, especially knowing that I changed my habits of working by the waters edge on that morning. My waist bag is usually around my waist, I rarely if ever take my tripod bag and my long lens I had with me would normally be over my shoulder.

As everyone who knows has said and I agree with, I am here to tell this tail which is the most important thing as well as having the photos to show for it as I still have the camera and the lens that was on it.

Thanks
Matthew...

How it all happens

I created this little video on one of my last mornings out along the coastline at Oak Park rock pool. It was a bit of a spur of the moment thing as when I got to the location it was still very dark. Pre-dawn hadn't yet broken and my first few exposures were minutes long [...]

Not enough waves yet.

I was in search of some waves this morning. You see sometimes I have the image in my head or I've seen something that I want to put my own stamp on.It didn't quite happen this morning the surf just wasn't really there, well not close enough to me anyway. Even with a long lens [...]

Magic mornings.

Some mornings just give and give and give so when the alarm goes off at 4:30am and you roll out of bed hoping that this might be that very special sky the reward happens. I could only call this image “magic” because it was just that a perfect little moment of magic that I have a single frame of [...]

There is never a plan

There is never a plan, well there is a plan but it can change depending on how I think the sky looks when I roll out of the second garage door into the darkness of the morning. I am always looking for something “different” (I hate that phrase) what I am always looking for is what suits me [...]

In store finally.

After much time and a "bit" of planning I finally have some SecretShire physical products in store at Cronulla Florist, shop 2/1-7 Cronulla Street, Cronulla. It's come about as a bit of chance meeting after I had a 3 month exhibition at Cronulla Central late 2015 into 2016. Kim saw the images, liked them and then [...]

Simple things make the most impact.

Bringing style and impact to your walls doesn't have to be complicated simple things make the biggest splash. It doesn't always have to be about the sky or the clouds. It doesn't always have to be about loads of colour either.Making your interiors sing is just about choosing the right image for the space. It has [...]
